Beautifully Different – Melody
A Project Celebrating Differences and Triumphs
Melody is Beautifully Different
I am so excited to introduce you to this beautiful little girl, Melody! Melody was born with a condition called Agensis of the Corpus Callosum and Microcephaly (a smaller than normal head). Agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) is a rare neurological disorder. It is characterized by a partial or complete absence (agenesis) of an area of the brain that connects the two cerebral hemispheres, in Melody’s case it is complete. ACC is frequently diagnosed during the first two years of life. Melody’s parents first learned of her disorder at their 20 week ultrasound, and then it was confirmed with an MRI at the age of 3 months. Melody is Beautifully Different!
ACC affects Melody’s life in a big way. She wears braces on her legs to give her support and with them she can stand while holding onto something or someone. Melody is learning how to walk using a walker, but her main form of transportation is a, as her Mom describes it, commando crawl (pulling herself with her arms while on her belly). She isn’t able to form many words yet, but babbles all day long. Just about everything is more difficult for Melody than it is for a typical kid. She has to practice things before she is able to do them. Despite things being harder for her she rarely gets frustrated and loves life! She goes to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Aquatic Therapy every week to help her learn and practice new skills.
Determined. Sweet. Perfect.
Melody seemed shy at first, but quickly warmed up to me during her photo session. She is like a ray of sunshine! I really enjoyed listening to her laugh, and seeing the amazing bond she shares with her Mom. Melody’s differences make her MORE beautiful! She amazes her family every day with new skills and the progress that she makes. Melody loves going to therapy and loves learning! She is always so full of joy and has the most contagious smile. She is determined. Once she sets her mind on something she will never give up!
