The Diagnosis

Calvin’s parents learned of his differences 2 days before he was born (at 30 weeks gestation). He has has a complete left hip restoration, in March 2018.

Semi Lobar Holoprosencephaly

Sem Lobar Holoprosencephaly is a subtype of holoprosencephaly (a rare congenital brain malformation resulting from incomplete separation of the two hemispheres.) characterized by incomplete forebrain division. It is intermediate in severity, being worse than lobar holoprosencephaly and better than alobar holoprosencephaly.

Spastic Quad Cerebral Palsy

Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common form of CP, representing at least 70% of diagnoses.  Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders primarily affecting muscle coordination, balance and voluntary movement.  The neurological condition typically appears in infancy or early childhood, resulting from irregular development or damage to the part of the brain responsible for mobility.

A Day in the Life of Calvin

Calvin goes to kindergarten. Because his differences affect everything he does (as he cannot  sit, stand, walk or talk), shopping, feeding, bathing etc are all different then a typical life. Calvin uses a wheelchair to get around, and is dependent on his Mom and Dad to help him with his daily tasks.

Determined. Happy. Joyful.

Calvin is truly amazing. He is everyone’s friend! Also, he is so funny and knows what he likes and what he doesn’t. His smiles will make the darkest day bright and full of hope. Calvin is super smart and remembers people, places and his favorite part is his favorite show! Above all, he is motivated and determined to do things and get what he wants. In his mothers words “Calvin is our entire world and we have been blessed with a love most people only dream of.”

Beautifully Different – Owen

Beautifully Different

A Project Celebrating Differences and Triumphs

Owen is Beautifully Different

Meet the amazing Owen! Owen has a condition that you have probably never heard of. In fact, it is estimated that up to 1 in 50 people have this condition. Owen was born with Prosopagnosia. Prosopagnosia, also called face blindness, is an impairment in the recognition of facial identity. Prosopagnosics often have difficulty recognizing family members, close friends, and even themselves. Owen, and other like him, have to use other ways to identify people. Such as recognizing their voice, or other distinguishable characteristics. Owen is Beautifully Different!

The Diagnosis

Owen and his family have only known about his condition for a year. It’s very rare for a child to receive a Prosopagnosia diagnosis, as they don’t often realize they have it until they are an adult.

A Day in the Life of Owen

There is no cure or treatment for Prosopagnosia but as time goes on those that have it tend to come up with their own coping mechanisms. Although something as simple as a new haircut can completely throw them off. Some people don’t even recognize their own spouse or children at times. Owen goes to a private school so he has more time with the same people at a smaller school in order to learn people and develop relationships with them.

Friendly. Funny. Loving.

Owen is such a sweet kid! His condition is “invisible” so no one would know Owen is any different, and he is very much a typical 5 year old boy in every other way! Kind, funny, energetic, and absolutely loves his family! Owen is an amazing kid and he absolutely loves life and loves people! He has an wonderful family and support system! I had the pleasure of meeting Owens whole family last fall for their family photo session, and I loved seeing their bond!

A Project Celebrating Differences and Triumphs

The Diagnosis

Trenton was born 6 weeks early, by emergency c-section. and was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for 3 weeks after birth. Trenton was diagnosed with his conditions at the age of 6, in 2016.

Autism

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.

ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children. ADHD also affects many adults. Symptoms of ADHD include inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement that is not fitting to the setting) and impulsivity (hasty acts that occur in the moment without thought). An estimated 8.4 percent of children and 2.5 percent of adults have ADHD.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can be beneficial in some situations. It can alert us to dangers and help us prepare and pay attention. Anxiety disorders differ from normal feelings of nervousness or anxiousness, and involve excessive fear or anxiety.

Global Developmental Delay

The term ‘developmental delay’ or ‘global development delay‘ is used when a child takes longer to reach certain development milestones than other children their age. This might include learning to walk or talk, movement skills, learning new things and interacting with others socially and emotionally.

A Day in the Life of Trenton

Trenton takes a little longer than most his age to process information. Trenton’s moods are affected easily, any little change in his routine can “throw off” the rest of his day. He has an aide at school who helps keep him focused and on task, and who clarifies information for him that his hard for him to process. School can be stressful because of having to sit and focus for long periods at a time. So his favorite part of his day at school is by far, recess! Trenton is very smart though, and loves to learn. His favorite subject is math. He loves numbers!

Thoughtful. Funny. Curious.

Trenton is constantly wanting to learn!  He loves baseball, and is a huge Cleveland Indians fan. He can tell you anything you want to know about any player on the team. Trenton is very knowledge about all of the other baseball teams as well. He also loves History, he likes learning about past Presidents, and the United States. Also, Trenton also enjoys learning facts about other countries. Trenton is very friendly and thoughtful. He absolutely loves getting to meet new people! The staff at school is always commenting about how sweet of a little boy he is. Additionally he has quite the sense of humor and loves to make people laugh. He is always making his family laugh, they say he is the funniest 9 year old they know! Trenton is just amazing, and I am so happy I had the chance to meet him!
